Why Commercial Fridge Failure Is a Business Emergency
A commercial fridge breakdown is not a minor inconvenience. Industry data and our own client experience consistently show that a single failure in a busy commercial kitchen, restaurant, hotel or retail outlet costs between £2,000 and £5,000 in London once you add up:
- Direct stock loss (perishable produce, meat, fish, dairy, prepared food)
- Emergency call-out premiums vs. contract response
- Lost trading hours or reduced service capacity
- Health-inspection risk and corrective-action documentation
- Insurance excess on any claim
- Cleanup labour for spoiled product
This is why speed matters, and why fridge/freezer repair is the wrong category to choose on price alone. The cost of getting it right, first time, fast, with proper diagnosis, is a fraction of the cost of repeated visits or pretend-fixes that fail the following weekend again.
What We Repair
Under-Counter Prep Fridges and Freezers
Foster, Williams, True, Polar, Gram, Polaris, Inomak, Mondial Elite. Standard catering equipment in almost every commercial kitchen, prep stations, sandwich stations, bar back-of-house, café undercounters. Common faults: door gasket wear, condenser blockage, fan motor failure, thermostat drift, and drain blockage.
Upright Commercial Fridges and Freezers
Single-door, double-door, three-door, and four-door upright units in stainless steel or coated finish, from manufacturers including Foster, Williams, Gram, True, Polaris, Inomak, Lec Commercial, Tefcold and Polar. Common faults: door seal degradation, condenser fouling, evaporator fan motor failure, compressor short-cycling, and control PCB failure.
Prep Counters with Chilled Wells
Pizza prep counters, sandwich prep counters, salad prep counters, sushi prep counters with refrigerated wells holding gastronorm pans. High-use, high-stress equipment, frequent door opening, heavy throughput, and regular exposure to hot kitchen ambient. Faults concentrate on door gaskets, well drainage, evaporator fans, and refrigerant charge.
Multi-Deck Display Refrigeration
Open-front multi-deck cabinets are used in supermarkets, convenience stores, delicatessens, butchers and food halls. Brands include Arneg, Williams, Carrier Commercial, Hussmann, AHT, Bonnet Névé and Frigoglass. High operational duty, open fronts maintain product visibility but mean continuous airflow load. Common faults: condenser coil dust loading, defrost cycle issues, evaporator coil icing, fan motor failure.
Glass-Door Display Cabinets and Bottle Coolers
Vertical glass-door cabinets for impulse purchase displays, drink coolers, wine display, gelato display, sushi display, deli serve-overs and bakery display. Brands include Caravell, Liebherr, IARP, ISA, Carrier, Williams, True and Frigoglass. Faults: glass-door seal degradation, condenser fouling, internal lighting failure, electronic control faults.
Ice Machines
Cube ice, flake ice, nugget ice and gourmet ice machines from Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, Brema, Maja, Follett, and Manitowoc Indigo. Ice machine failure in a hotel cafeteria, bar, fast-food outlet or healthcare unit is a same-day priority. Common faults: water inlet valve, ice harvest cycle, evaporator scale buildup, condenser fouling, pump failure, and sensor faults.
Blast Chillers and Blast Freezers
Rapid pull-down equipment used in central kitchens, ready-meal production, ice cream production, hotel banqueting and any HACCP cook-chill operation. Brands include Foster, Williams, Friginox, Skope, Polaris, and Irinox. Faults concentrate on door seals, evaporator coil performance, refrigerant charge, and control PCB. Blast chiller failure during production is critical because the entire production batch is exposed to bacterial growth zone temperatures if pull-down fails.
Gelato and Ice Cream Display
Gelato display chests, ice cream display freezers, soft-serve machines, and ice cream cake display. Brands include IARP, ISA, Carpigiani, Coldelite, Taylor, and Carravell. Sensitive equipment, small temperature variations significantly affect product texture and saleability. Same-day repair is the norm.
Bar-Back Refrigeration
Bottle coolers, draft beer dispense fridges, wine fridges, glass chillers and frosters, and back-bar display units. Brands include True, Polar, Husky, Liebherr, Caravell, and Williams. Common faults: door seal wear, drain blockage, evaporator fan, and refrigerant charge.
Small Walk-In Repairs
Small catering walk-in fridges and freezers up to ~15m³, repair of refrigeration plant (monoblock and split), evaporator faults, control PCB issues, door seal replacement, and panel repair. (Larger walk-in cold rooms are covered on our Cold Rooms page.)
Common Faults: Symptom to Cause
The most common reasons commercial fridges and freezers fail. Knowing the symptoms means catching faults early, before stock is lost.
Fridge Not Cold Enough / Running But Not Cooling
Most likely causes: refrigerant leak (low charge), fouled condenser coil, frozen evaporator coil, failed evaporator fan motor, failed compressor capacitor, blocked condensate drain causing ice build-up, door gasket failure allowing warm air infiltration, thermostat drift.
What to check first: condenser coil (clean of grease, dust, lint?), door gasket (intact, sealing properly?), fans (running, free of dust loading?). If all is clear, call for a diagnosis. Running a fridge that is short on refrigerant burns the compressor out.
Fridge Running All The Time / Compressor Never Stops
Most likely causes: refrigerant low, condenser fouled, ambient too high for the unit’s design, defrost cycle stuck, door not closing properly, temperature setpoint too low.
Why it matters: Continuous-run compressors burn out in months instead of years. The repair cost for the underlying cause is a fraction of the compressor replacement cost.
Fridge Making Loud Noises
By sound type:
- Grinding or screeching, fan motor bearing failure, fan blade obstruction, compressor mechanical damage
- Clicking or buzzing, failing contactor, capacitor on the way out, PCB relay fault
- Hissing or whistling, refrigerant leak (often at flare joints), restricted airflow
- Banging or knocking, compressor internal damage, loose mounting
When to call: any new mechanical noise. Mechanical noises don’t fix themselves; they progress to failure.
Fridge Leaking Water on the Floor
Most likely causes: blocked condensate drain, failed condensate pump, frozen evaporator coil defrosting in an unusual pattern, drain pan corrosion or damage, or unit not level.
Action: mop, switch off at the wall, call. Water leaks compound, long-term water damage to floors, electrical hazards, and trip hazards in commercial kitchens.
Ice Build-Up on Evaporator or Around Door
Most likely causes: defrost cycle fault (timer, heater, sensor), door gasket failure, frequent door openings, very high humidity ambient, warm product loaded directly into the fridge.
Fridge Not Turning On
Most likely causes: tripped circuit breaker (don’t keep resetting, there’s an electrical fault), failed plug or socket, failed PCB, control panel fault, or internal fuse blown.
Display Fridge Misting Up Inside
Most likely causes: door gasket failure, automatic door not closing fully, humidity infiltration, glass-door heater failure, ambient humidity too high or recently loaded warm product.
Ice Machine Not Producing Ice / Slow Production
Most likely causes: water inlet valve faulty, water filter blocked, ice harvest cycle stuck, evaporator plate scale buildup condenser dust loading, refrigerant low, ice level sensor blocked or failed.
Display Cabinet Lights Not Working
Most likely causes: LED driver failure, individual LED strip failure, door switch failure, wiring fault. Common but visible, it affects product display and sales presentation.
Strange Smells from Fridge
Most likely causes: stagnant water in the drain pan or drain line (bacterial growth), product spoilage hidden inside, gasket biological growth, refrigerant leak (chemical smell, urgent).
When to act fast: any burning electrical smell, turn off at the wall and call immediately. Fire risk.
Our Repair Process
- Phone diagnosis. Describe the symptom, the brand, the model number, if possible, and any fault code on the display. Our engineers will often identify the likely cause before the van leaves, which means the right parts arrive on the first visit.
- On-site diagnosis. Engineer attends with a stocked van. Visual inspection, electrical readings, refrigerant pressure readings, and performance test. Cause confirmed.
- Fixed-price quote. The diagnostic fee is the only fee until you approve the quote for any chargeable parts and labour. No surprise invoices.
- Repair on first visit where possible. Common spares are carried for major brands. First-visit fix rate is typically 80–90% across the year.
- Test, certify and document. System tested under load. Temperatures verified. Refrigerant work logged to F-Gas (UK). Written report emailed within 24 hours.
- 12-month workmanship warranty on every repair. Manufacturer’s warranty applies separately to replacement parts.
Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) Contracts
A maintenance contract is the most cost-effective way to run commercial refrigeration. Industry data, and our own takeover-survey records, consistently show that £1 invested in PPM saves £5–£8 in reactive repair costs.

Why Commercial Operators Choose J SONS & CO.
Phone diagnosis before dispatch. Quote the symptom, the brand, and the fault code if there is one. Engineers often identify the likely cause before the van leaves, which means the right parts arrive on the first visit, not a follow-up visit.
80–90% first-visit fix rate. Vans carry stocked common spares, capacitors, contactors, fan motors, condensate pumps, gaskets, and thermostats for the top brands. Most repairs are resolved in a single visit.
Fixed-price quote before any chargeable parts work. Diagnostic fee is the only fee until you approve the parts and labour quote.
Honest repair-vs-replace advice. Commercial fridges over 8–10 years old with major component failure are often more cost-effective to replace. We tell you that, even though replacement is a bigger job than a repair.
12-month workmanship warranty on every repair. Parts carry their own manufacturer’s warranty in addition.
Single contractor for repair, maintenance and installation. When the repair doesn’t make sense, and replacement is the right answer, we handle the swap from the same call.
Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can you respond to a commercial fridge breakdown?
In London, target response is 2 hours in Central London during office hours, same-day across Greater London.
What does a commercial fridge repair cost?
In London, a typical call-out plus diagnostic is £95–£165 for commercial. Parts and additional labour are quoted before work proceeds.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
Yes, a standard call-out plus first-hour diagnostic fee is charged on every visit. This is the only fee until you approve the quote for any chargeable parts and labour work. Contract clients pay a discounted rate.
My commercial fridge keeps running and never stops. Should I be worried?
Yes. A compressor that runs continuously will fail prematurely, typically within months rather than years. Causes are usually fixable for a fraction of compressor replacement cost: low refrigerant, fouled condenser, defrost fault, or door seal failure. Book a service visit before the compressor fails.
How long should a commercial fridge last?
Properly maintained, 10–15 years for a well-built unit (Foster, Williams, Gram, True). Without maintenance, 4–7 years is more typical; compressors fail first, usually triggered by a fault that maintenance would have caught.
Is it worth repairing an old commercial fridge, or should I replace it?
Three rules. If repair cost exceeds 50% of replacement cost AND the unit is over 10 years old, replace. If the refrigerant is R22 (banned for top-up in the UK) or R404A (being phased down), plan replacement. If the compressor has failed and the unit is over 8 years old, replace is usually more cost-effective. We give honest repair-vs-replace advice at diagnosis.
What is F-Gas and why does it matter?
F-Gas Regulations 2015 govern refrigerant handling in the UK. Every refrigeration system using fluorinated refrigerant must have refrigerant work carried out by F-Gas certified engineers, must have an F-Gas log kept up to date, and must have mandatory leak checks at intervals set by refrigerant charge. Penalties for non-compliance reach £200,000. J SONS & CO. manages F-Gas logs on every refrigeration system we maintain.
Do you provide a 24-hour emergency service?
In London, 24/7 emergency response for PPM contract clients; out-of-hours response for non-contract clients subject to engineer availability and out-of-hours rate.
What brands do you repair?
Every major commercial brand, Foster, Williams, Gram, True, Polar, Polaris, Inomak, Mondial Elite, Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman, Carrier Commercial, Hussmann, Arneg, AHT, Liebherr, Caravell, Tefcold, IARP, ISA, Carpigiani, Coldelite, Taylor, Williams, and others. Full brand list in the Brands section above.
Do you stock spares?
Yes, common spares for the top brands (capacitors, contactors, fan motors, condensate pumps, gaskets, thermostats) are carried in every van. For less common parts, we source from manufacturer agents same-day where possible, 2–7 days for parts shipped from manufacturer warehouses.
